A walk at the Bernina Pass

18 January 2024

The Bernina Pass on the border of Lombardy and Switzerland is one of Italy’s most breathtakingly scenic roads, and a place of exceptional beauty in winter. Standing at a height of over two thousand metres, each winter the pass is blanketed with metres of snow. Travelling the road, which is open throughout the season, offers the perfect way to enjoy the snowy scenery.

Simply parking along the road is your gateway to a wonderful walk in the snow, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery across Lombardy and Switzerland. Keep in mind that at these altitudes it is important to be properly equipped even for a simple walk: in winter temperatures at the Bernina Pass can fall to -20°C!

We recommend dressing in layers so you can easily adapt to any changes in temperature – walking on snow is no picnic and you may well find yourself sweating! You’ll also need suitable footwear such as the new Dolomite Tamaskan, specially created for walking on snow, with a Vibram sole and exceptional grip even on ice. Depending on conditions, it is also a good idea to have snow shoes for fresh snowfall or crampons for difficult, icy sections.

Always check the local weather report and trail conditions before setting off, and remember to take enough food and water. A winter walk on the Bernina Pass promises to be an amazing experience, with enchanting views which work wonders for the soul!
