Crossing Patagonia: A trek to Cerro Castillo

04 July 2023

The climb is long and very steep at times, but the multiple landscapes that accompany us during the day definitely repay us for all the sweat. We tread through enchanted forests that recall the magical settings of The Lord of the Rings, over sand, water, rock, snow and, finally, the bare ice. The only sounds here are those of nature, and they vary according to the altitude. While the wind and the shrill squawking of the vultures are the masters of the summit, the sounds change considerably in the forest where, if you listen carefully, you can hear the ominous creaking of the trunks of the trees beaten by the wind, big and ancient trees that seem to want to tell you something.

If you have a good imagination, in these places you can get lost picturing fabulous tales populated by strange creatures that inhabit the plants and brooks that dominate our path. At almost eight hours from our departure, where there was no lack of moments of rest and contemplation, we reach the valley again, where we charge into the first minimarket we find, buying our beloved pasta, which we have been dreaming about for hours, and a good bottle of wine that will repay us for all the effort and will make us forget the tiredness, but not the beauty that we enjoyed.
