Towards the Cerro Torre

02 April 2019

It looks incredible. Yesterday we were in Belluno (Italy), and now we’re here in Argentina, on our way towards the Laguna Torre, in the Los Glaciares National Park.

I’ve walked this path plenty of times in my life, but whenever I come back here it’s just like the first one.

Every time I see the Scream of stone peeking out the clouds it’s a new emotion.

That’s one of the most beautiful, famous and challenging mountain to conquer in the world. In my past experiences I found myself walking this path with a mix of fear, anxiety and excitement at the only thought of climbing that peak. But today I’m here as a hiker: relaxed and full of platonic love for those magnificent walls!

The group I’m leading is tight-knit. Everyone willingly refused to have a first day of rest and acclimatization so we rushed towards this phenomenon of nature. For those not used to climbing the "Tirolesa" is already a small emotion.

Further on our way, the sky suddenly reopened and the Torre Egger appeared in all its magnificence: a blade in the sky.

I wonder how many adventures and tragedies took place for those peaks, which drove crazy many climbers and created many mysteries, such as the one of Cesare Maestri. Striking events that have divided - and still divide - the mountain world, but also many small and great deeds, some of which have marked the history and evolution of mountaineering.

Our walk goes up till the base of the great glacier. I read on my companions’ eyes wonder and an unspeakable emotion. This is my little, big prize. In our heart it’s like we have conquered the Cerro Torre!
